Expanding my horizons
Now that the record is done, and I don't have to incessantly listen to my own songs, I've had a few different things in the CD player this week. It ain't the latest and greatest, since I'm not as much of a scenester as I used to be, but here's my top 10 for the week in no particular order:
Death Cab for Cutie - The Sound of Settling
Macha - Smash Grab (on the whole, this new CD was disappointing compared to their first 2)
Systems Officer - Forever this Cyanide (the better half of Pinback, in my opinion..)
Lambchop - The Lone Official, Timothy B. Schmidt, Under a Dream of a Lie (sorry I missed them and the Merge Fest in it's entirety)
Brian Jonestown Massacre - Going to Hell (ever since seeing them at SXSW and discovering almost their entire catalog online http://www.brianjonestownmassacre.com/mp3.php I can't get enough of these guys).
Thermals - Our Trip (the new Wipers for the 21st century)
Groovski - Social Skills http://www.groovski.com This thing sounds like it coulda come out on Rough Trade in 1979. Wish they played outside of their hometown of New Haven Connecticut.
The Mitchells - Flashlight Hunter. For those of you who mourn the loss of Polvo. This will make your ears do a double take.
The National - Murder Me Rachael, Available. 2 great songs surrounded by 10 mediocre ones. But these 2 are really great.
Sun Kil Moon - the whole damn thing. I was never much of an RHP fan, though Old Ramon perked my ears up. I was not prepared to like this as much as I did though. I've read some reviews that think this is one of Mark Kozelek's weaker records. I think they're fuckin' nuts.
Don't believe the hype category:
Franz Ferdinand - I just can't hear what everyone's getting all worked up about
The Hives - I haven't heard the whole thing, but based on the few songs I have heard, I'm not running to the store.
Time to go batten down the hatches for Charlie.
